Bringing Warmth Into Our Homes This Season

November always feels like an invitation to slow down, gather close, and bring a little extra warmth into our spaces — both for ourselves and the people we love. As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, I find so much joy in small rituals that make home feel like a true retreat. Here are a few of my favorite ways to bring that sense of comfort and light into our lives this time of year:

Lights that Linger

A few years ago, we wrapped the trees in our orchard with twinkle lights for a dear friend’s wedding we hosted. The inspiration came from the grand, glowing entryway at The Grand Wailea in Maui, and the result was pure magic. It brought me so much joy that I decided to keep them up year-round — but there’s something especially beautiful about them during the dark winter months, when they shimmer against the early sunset. It’s a small thing that makes every evening feel a little brighter.

Candles, Fireplaces, and all Things Hygge

When the chill sets in, I reach for candles and light the first fires of the season. There’s something grounding about that soft, flickering light and the gentle crackle of wood — a reminder to slow down and savor the simple moments. Embracing the hygge of the season (that Danish art of cozy contentment) is one of the best ways I know to welcome November.

Gathering with Good People

One of my favorite ways to bring warmth into life is by staying connected — even as the calendar fills up. I make a point to gather at least once a week with people who brighten my day. Sometimes it’s heading out to see live music, sometimes it’s breaking bread at home, and sometimes it’s our weekly “dips” in the Puget Sound (yes, even in the cold!). No matter what, that connection makes the busy holiday season feel a little more manageable — and a lot more meaningful.

A Recipe That Warms the Soul

Congee (Rice Porridge) With Minced Pork and Crispy Shallots

When it comes to comfort food, few things beat a warm bowl of congee. For those who haven’t tried it, congee is a silky rice porridge that’s beloved across Asia — soothing, simple, and endlessly adaptable. One of our family favorites comes from chef J. Kenji López-Alt: his Basic Congee recipe with pork, shrimp, garlic, and ginger. It’s deeply flavorful and wonderfully comforting — the kind of dish that warms you straight to your soul. Even our 13- and 16-year-olds love it!

If you’re looking for a cozy meal to make on a chilly evening, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s the perfect dish to share around the table — simple, nourishing, and made to be enjoyed together.

As the season unfolds, I’m reminded that the little things — sharing a meal, lighting a fire, or spending time with people who brighten your day — are what make this time of year truly special. I hope you find ways to create your own moments of warmth and joy, whether through simple traditions, cozy rituals, or gathering with loved ones.

Wishing you a November filled with comfort, connection, and a touch of holiday magic.
